Fractional Finance Director · Owner-managed businesses
You have an accountant. But who is helping you run the numbers?
Your accounts are up to date. But are your numbers actually helping you run your business? I work alongside your bookkeeper and accountant to turn that information into practical decisions about profit, cash, pricing and growth.
Your finance team
- Bookkeeper
- Your bookkeeper gets the numbers right.
- Accountant
- Your accountant keeps you compliant.
- Fractional Finance Director
- I help you decide what to do next.
I work with your existing bookkeeper and accountant — not instead of them.
Running a business takes more than a bank balance.
Knowing your sales or checking the bank account only tells you so much. To run a successful business, you need to know:
Tap any question to see what it means.
01Are we actually making enough profit?
Not just whether there's a profit, but whether it's enough to reward the risk you take, pay you properly and fund the next stage of the business.
02Where are we making it?
Overall profit can hide a lot. Breaking it down by activity, site or type of work shows what's carrying the business and what's holding it back.
03Which customers, products or jobs make us money?
Some of your busiest customers or favourite jobs may be costing you money. Seeing the margin on each one shows where to focus, and where to rethink the price.
04Why is cash tight when we're profitable?
Profit and cash aren't the same. Late payers, stock, VAT, loan repayments and growth itself can all soak up cash the profit figure says you have.
05Can we afford another employee?
Beyond the salary there's employer's NI, pension, equipment and the time it takes someone to get up to speed. We work out what extra work or margin they need to bring in to pay their way.
06Are our prices high enough?
Many owner-managed businesses under-price. A small, well-judged price change can often do more for profit than winning more work.
07Where will our cash position be in six months?
A simple rolling cash forecast shows the pinch points before they arrive, so you can act early rather than react late.
08Is the business becoming more valuable?
Whether you plan to sell, pass it on or keep running it, the things that build value — reliable profit, good information, less reliance on you — can be worked on now.
That's where I can help.
Completing the finance team
I'm not here to replace your accountant.
If you already have a good bookkeeper and accountant, that's great. I want to work with them. Your bookkeeper provides the accurate day-to-day information. Your accountant deals with accounts, tax and compliance. I sit between the two.

Real business stories
What does a Fractional Finance Director actually do?

Construction & contracting
The business was making money. One of its jobs wasn't.
A building contractor was profitable overall — but one contract was quietly losing a substantial amount, hidden by the others.

Hospitality
The café was busy. But which part of it was actually making money?
Headline sales and gross profit looked fine. Looking underneath them changed the conversation completely.

That's the difference between producing numbers and using them.
You don't need another report. You need someone to sit down with you and ask what the numbers are telling you — and what you're going to do about it.
How it works
No complicated consultancy project.
- 1
We understand the business
We start with what matters to you — not what reports I want to produce.
- 2
I work with the people you already have
Your bookkeeper and accountant both stay involved.
- 3
We make the numbers useful
The information you actually need. Not a 30-page pack nobody reads.
- 4
We talk regularly
What are the numbers telling us, and what are we going to do about it?
- 5
We look forward
Not just “What happened?” but “What happens next?”
Let's talk about your business
If your accounts tell you what happened but don't help you decide what to do next, let's have a conversation.
No presentation. No hard sell. Just a discussion about your business, the numbers you currently have and the questions you'd like them to answer.
